Spring Clean Your Oral Health Regime!

07/03/2019

Kent Smile Studio says take time to invest in your personal oral care!

If you’re anything like most people in the UK, you have already started cleaning your house for spring, which seems to have sprung rather suddenly!

Getting rid of cobwebs, clearing the dead leaves away, dusting off the garden furniture, washing the walls; some love it, some hate it, but most of us agree it has to be done in preparation for the warmer months.

Spring can also be a really great time to refresh and renew other areas of your life. Perhaps you know you can do better with exercise, or you could work harder at work? Maybe you’re not getting enough sleep, so your bedtime routine needs to change?

Why not make positive changes in all aspects of life before we hit that quarter of the year mark? With that positive and responsible attitude of rejuvenation, your team here at Kent Smile Studio wants to help you spring clean your oral health regime, so that even if you don’t get your home sparkling clean in time for spring, you can at the very least have a healthy, stunning smile this month, and every month this year and beyond.

Let’s go – here are our top tips to help you spring clean your oral health regime:

Could Your Oral Regime Be Better?

Although an oral health regime boils down to a couple of minutes, a couple of times a day, there is actually a lot to the process. For example; are you brushing for the whole two minutes? Are you brushing twice a day? Are you brushing all areas of your teeth effectively? Are you ensuring you only spit after brushing and don’t rinse away all the toothpaste? Taking the time to mindfully brush your teeth, ensuring you spend at least 30 seconds on each side of each arch, twice a day, will ensure you are actively doing your very best to maintain your healthy smile.

Do Your Tools Need Changing?

The tools that you use to brush your teeth are really important because they help you to effectively remove the nasty plaque and food bits and pieces that can cause damage if they are not removed.

At the very least you should be switching your toothbrush on a 3 monthly basis, or when the brush gets worn (whichever comes first). You should be making an effort to keep your brush away from other brushes used by your family and away from the toilet, in a dry and contained space if possible. We also recommend ditching current toothbrushes following an illness and getting a new one.

At the very most, you should be using the most effective brush for your needs. There are so many to choose from, there’s something to suit everyone. Manual toothbrushes are as cheap as 50p to £1 from some retailers, and that can be for a pack of three! Manual brushes have a soft, medium or firm brush attached to them. Electric toothbrushes are a lot more elaborate and can vibrate, oscillate, rotate or all three. They are a more expensive investment than a manual brush but are thought to be the most effective way to brush your teeth.

If you don’t know which type of brush to use, or how to use your brush effectively, our Maidstone and Chatham hygienists can help provide you with tips and advice unique to your needs.

Are You Going To The Dentist Every Six Months?

Every six months you should be visiting your dentist unless advised to visit more often. A visit to us is so important to help check everything is as it should be with your teeth and gums. You can also update the dentist on any changes to your oral health or to your general health, which is directly related to your smile health. Your dentist will also take this opportunity to do an oral cancer check and to check any current dental work you have, such as veneers or fillings.

Think of your six month checkup with the dentist as your six monthly spring clean for your smile!

Do You Floss?

We recommend that you floss to remove the debris and plaque your toothbrush is unable to reach. Following your two minute brush, floss between the teeth and don’t be afraid to use about ten inches of floss each ‘session’. Just like your brushing routine, if you feel unsure how to do it well, our hygienist can help. Flossing is a really important way to enhance the effectiveness of your oral hygiene regime so the sooner you can start, the better.

Could You Eat And Drink In A Way That Is Less Damaging For Your Teeth?

It is important to note that if you currently smoke, or drink to excess, those should be the things that you focus on first. Habits like that will damage your oral health whatever you eat, so we recommend a spring clean of habits as a first priority.

If you don’t smoke and drink to excess then your diet may be a really good area to work on. Even something as simple as cutting down how much full-sugar, fizzy pop you consume will make a huge difference to your smile health. Add to that an increase in colourful fruits and vegetables, healthy sources of calcium protein and healthy fats, and a decrease in starchy, salty and sugary foods and you’re well on your way to a healthier smile, and a healthier body too!

Cosmetic Dentistry For When Spring Cleaning Isn’t Enough To Save Your Smile

Through dental injury, bad habits, infections or other issues you may have a smile that you do not love. Maybe you have missing teeth, stained teeth, misaligned teeth, lots of gums showing, chipped teeth or other problems that mean your smile is not something you are proud of. Perhaps a spring clean for your smile is not enough because it doesn’t look how you would like it to look. Cosmetic dentistry, restorative dentistry and a general smile makeover might be what you need. We can use all kinds of treatments like porcelain veneers, implants, cosmetic bonding, teeth whitening, crowns, inlays and onlays, white fillings and more to give you the smile you dream of. Initially we will look to treat the health of your smile, dealing with any active gum disease or dental decay. This is to give you a fantastic foundation to build your gorgeous new smile on.

We have the tools and the skills to help you get a beautiful new smile this year and the first step is always a detailed consultation.
