Crowns & Bridges

Dental Crown

Crowns and bridges are common treatments at our Maidstone & Chatham clinics, providing excellent tooth repairs for patients.

A crown, which is also known as a cap, is placed over a tooth in order to make it stronger, restore its shape, maintain the size it should be and also make it look better. Before a crown is put on a tooth, the tooth will be prepared by the dentist to ensure it can be fitted efficiently and aesthetically. Once the crown is firmly in place, it will completely cover the tooth which can be seen on and above the gum line.

Why Would A Dental Crown Need To Be Used?

There are a wide variety of reasons a dental crown would need to be used including, but not limited to;

  • Providing protection for a tooth that has been weakened through injury or tooth decay
  • To strengthen and hold together the remnants of a cracked tooth
  • To provide extra strength to a tooth containing a large filling which doesn't offer sufficient strength in its current form
  • To anchor a dental bridge
  • To improve the aesthetics of a tooth that is discoloured or misshapen
  • As part of a root canal treatment
  • As part of a dental implant treatment

What Are Dental Crowns Made From?

With dental technology advancing at great speed over recent years, there is now a wide variety of materials which can be used to manufacture dental crowns. Each differ in their respective advantages.

100% Porcelain Crowns

100% porcelain crowns are incredibly natural looking and are aesthetically pleasing. Whereas metal bonded crowns can reveal a darkened gum line, 100% porcelain crowns retain their natural colour completely so there are no 'tell-tale' signs that the tooth is not real. To complete the look, 100% porcelain crowns are created to match the shade of your current teeth, so not only are they suitable for people with metal allergies but they look completely natural too.

Before and after cosmetic crowns

Gold crown

Gold crowns offer an attractive alternative to a 'natural' looking tooth. They are the strongest type of crown and resist chipping and wear extremely well. They can also be fitted with a high level of precision as gold is so easy to work with.

Porcelain crowns bonded to metal

With porcelain metal bonded crowns, the porcelain casing is bonded to metal in order to provide it with extra strength. The porcelain casing can still be matched to your natural tooth colour and looks aesthetically pleasing, but a darkened gum line will still appear where the tooth meets the gum, making them slightly less natural looking than 100% porcelain crowns.

Dental bridges

Dental Bridge

Dental bridges are an excellent tooth replacement option and can be used to replace single or several missing teeth.

Dental bridges hold a ‘fake’ tooth in place by bonding it securely to the surrounding teeth which have been prepared in a similar way to teeth that have been crowned. The reason they are called dental bridges is because the fake tooth or teeth in the gap where the natural teeth are missing, 'bridge the gap'.
