A Guide To Dental Implants

A Modern, Long-lasting Solution For Missing Teeth in Maidstone & Chatham

Natural tooth compared to dental implant

Dental implants have been around for a very long time and have actually been recorded in archaeological digs where skeletons were found to have materials inserted into the jawbone. However, technology has certainly advanced significantly since then and the beginning of modern dental implantology began in the 1960's having been discovered by Per-Ingvar Branemark of Sweden.

In the last half a decade particularly, dental implant technology has come a very long way and implants are now considered to be perhaps the most effective tooth replacement solution.

At Kent Smile Studio you can expect to receive highly accurate, professional dental implant placement performed by our highly experienced implant dentists.

How Do Dental Implants Work?

Generally, dental implants tend to be used to support one tooth, or several teeth depending on your needs. Here at our Maidstone & Chatham clinics we use Endosseous Implants, otherwise known as Root Form Implants. These are made from titanium and are designed to accurately replicate a natural tooth root. In order to work properly (following the implant process) both the implant and the jawbone need to fuse together - this process is called Osseointegration and can take some time to occur.

Dental implants can be used for one missing tooth or several depending on a patient’s requirements. We also offer a process called ‘All on 4’ (Teeth In A Day) which enables a patient to visit us and have implants and a full set of teeth fitted in one single visit.

The Implant Treatment

Before you come in for your implant treatment, we will provide you with a thorough consultation which is carried out at here our local dental practice. During this process we will discuss your suitability for the treatment, discuss the process with you and answer any questions you might have about the treatment. During this consultation we will use advanced dental technology to ensure that the implants created for you in our dental laboratory are the perfect fit for your individual needs. This process involves CT scans, measurements and photographs.

When you come in for your treatment we will prepare your mouth for the implants by making holes in the jawbone. We use a local anaesthetic to do this so there's no need to worry about any pain. For patients particularly anxious about the procedure, we can also offer IV, oral or inhalation sedation.

Once the implants are in place, they are left to bond with the jawbone for a set period of time and after this bonding process is complete, a crown is then attached to the implant to complete the full tooth restoration.

All on 4

Here at Kent Smile Studio, we like to offer our patients the most effective, efficient and cost effective procedures available. One of those procedures is the All On 4 procedure which enables a patient to visit and have a full arch of teeth replaced in one session. This procedure uses a slightly different form of implant dentistry where the rear implants are placed at a 45 degree angle. This increases their strength and stability and enables them to securely hold the new arch of teeth. A fixed bridge is then attached to the implants enabling the patient to leave the practice with a brand new set of great looking teeth!

How Long Should I Expect Dental Implants To Last?

Dental implants are advanced pieces of technology and are made from titanium, an extremely strong and durable metal. We make sure you are completely informed on your aftercare and maintenance, ensuring that with proper support and check-ups from us, you will be able to enjoy your dental implants for a very long time. In fact, dental implants can last you a lifetime depending on personal circumstances.
